Our School’s Sustainability Actions
We are committed to helping create a greener, healthier future for our pupils and community. Following the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, our actions focus on building knowledge, reducing our environmental impact, and involving children directly in meaningful climate action.
Developing a Whole‑School Climate Action Plan
Government guidance requires all education settings to have a nominated sustainability lead and a Climate Action Plan by 2025. Our plan sets clear goals across energy use, waste reduction, biodiversity, and travel, and involves pupils in shaping and monitoring progress.
Our actions include:
- Appointing a Sustainability Lead supported by staff and pupils.
- Setting measurable targets for carbon reduction, aligned with DfE expectations.
- Regularly reviewing progress as part of ongoing school development.
Enhancing Nature and Biodiversity on Site
We are transforming our school grounds into richer natural habitats and giving pupils hands‑on opportunities to learn and make a real environmental impact.
Our actions include:
- Planting pollinator‑friendly gardens, green walls, and trees.
- Creating wildlife-friendly features such as ponds or log piles.
- Mapping habitats and uploading data to the Nature Park’s digital platform, contributing to national biodiversity research.
These activities help children build science and data skills while seeing the real difference they can make.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
In line with DfE guidance, we are committed to becoming more energy‑efficient and reducing carbon emissions across the school estate.
- Improving energy efficiency through monitoring and upgrading lighting, heating, and insulation.
- Encouraging energy‑saving behaviours across the school day.
- Reviewing water use and reducing wastage.
Promoting Sustainable Travel
Reducing emissions from travel is an important part of our Climate Action Plan.
Our actions include:
- Encouraging walking, cycling, and scooting to school.
- Offering curriculum activities on air quality and sustainable transport choices.
Reducing Waste and Improving Recycling
We aim to reduce waste across our school and make recycling a routine part of daily life.
Our actions include:
- Expanding recycling points in classrooms and communal spaces.
- Running pupil-led waste audits to identify improvements.
- Reducing single-use materials wherever possible, in line with government sustainability guidance.
Embedding Sustainability in Learning
The government’s strategy outlines the importance of climate education and developing green skills for future careers. We embed sustainability across subjects to help all pupils understand their role in protecting the planet.
Our actions include:
- Linking curriculum topics to climate change, nature, and global citizenship.
- Participating in the Climate Leaders’ Award to help pupils develop leadership and problem‑solving skills.
- Using digital tools such as mapping and data collection
Empowering Pupils as Sustainability Leaders
Children are central to our sustainability journey. Following DfE expectations, learners are actively involved in shaping decisions and taking action within the school community.
Our actions include:
- Running Eco Teams and student committees focused on environment initiatives.
- Involving pupils in monitoring energy use, biodiversity, and progress toward targets.
- Celebrating achievements through school events and awards.
Working Together for a Greener Future
By taking these actions, we are helping to build a school environment where sustainability is lived, not just learned—preparing our pupils to thrive in a changing world and contribute to a brighter future for everyone.
