In The Hive, we are placing a huge focus on the importance of home reading and encouraging every child to develop a lifelong love of books.
We are asking all children to read at home at least 5 times each week. Not only does this support reading progress in class, but it also helps children build confidence, independence, imagination and knowledge of the world around them.
Our reading area has been inspired by the wonderful story The BFG, where our reading, within class, becomes a magical journey to Dream Country. Just as the BFG collects and shares dreams, our children are collecting their own reading dreams too!
🌟 Every child has their very own Dream Jar, where they can add dreams based on the number of home reads they complete. The more they read, the more dreams they can collect, helping to make their reading journey both exciting and rewarding.
🏆 To celebrate commitment and effort, we also offer reading certificates in The Hive. These recognise the fantastic reading habits children are building and reward those who are showing dedication to reading both at home and in school.
Reading opens doors to new worlds, develops creativity, improves communication and helps children succeed across all areas of learning. Most importantly, it provides skills that will support them long after they leave the classroom.
As a provision, we are determined to show that reading matters. By promoting regular home reading across the school and within The Hive, we hope to inspire children to see books not just as something they use in lessons, but as something they can enjoy throughout their lives.

Whole School Reading Incentive
Note: Our focus on reading is not just within The Hive, but is part of a whole-school commitment to promoting a love of reading. Every child who reads regularly has the opportunity to be recognised as a Reading Champion. Reading Champions are celebrated for their dedication and enthusiasm for books and can also win a special reading bookmark as a reward for their efforts.
Whether children are collecting dreams in their Dream Jars, earning certificates in The Hive, or working towards becoming a Reading Champion, every read counts! Together, we are creating a community of confident readers and showing that reading can unlock new opportunities, adventures and dreams both in school and in the wider world. 📚✨🐝
