Inclusion in Our School
Our inclusive philosophy is simple:
“Essential for some, useful for all”
This means that the strategies and supports we put in place for specific pupils often benefit everyone — creating a learning environment where all children can access, engage with, and excel in their education.
We achieve this through high-quality teaching, targeted support, and strong pastoral care, ensuring that inclusion is embedded into every aspect of school life. Our teachers, support staff, and leaders work closely with families and external professionals to tailor provision to individual needs and remove barriers early.
At SAF, inclusion is more than a policy — it is a commitment to equity, empathy, and excellence. Every child is seen, supported, and celebrated for who they are.
At Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School and Nursery, inclusion means we continually adapt our school and the way we work so that every member of our community can be present, participate and succeed. We believe it is our responsibility to shape our school to meet the needs of our children, rather than expecting them to change to fit us. We are committed to reducing barriers to learning, school life and belonging, and regularly review and develop our culture, policies and practices so they reflect and support the evolving diversity of our pupils.”
We will…
- Make reasonable adjustments for those with a disability by ensuring increased access to the curriculum, the environment and to printed information for all
- Ensure that children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) engage in the activities of the school alongside pupils who do not have SEN
- Reduce barriers to progress by embedding the principles in the National Curriculum Inclusion Statement
- Support parents in securing special educational provision for pupils for whom this is required, that is “additional to and different from” that provided within the differentiated curriculum to better respond to the four areas of need: Communication and interaction; Cognition and learning; Social, mental and emotional health; Sensory/physical
- Request, monitor and respond to parent/carers’ and pupils’ views in order to evidence high levels of confidence and partnership
- Ensure a high level of staff expertise to meet pupil needs, through well-targeted continuing professional development
- Support pupils with medical conditions enabling full inclusion in all school activities by ensuring consultation with health and social care professionals
- Work in cooperative and productive partnership with the Local Authority and other outside agencies, to ensure there is a multi-professional approach to meeting the needs of all vulnerable learners
Our school offer highlights what we are able to provide children with SEND and links strongly to our SEN policy.
Meet Our SENDCo – Mrs Pigg
Hello, I’m Mrs Pigg, the SENDCo at Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School and Nursery.
Alongside my teaching qualifications and many years of experience, I hold the National Award for SEN Coordination. My role is to identify and coordinate provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring that every pupil receives the support they need to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
A key part of my work involves building strong partnerships — with parents and carers, teachers, outside agencies, educational psychologists, and other professionals — to provide the best possible outcomes for every child.
At SAF, inclusion is the golden thread that runs through everything we do. I am passionate about ensuring that every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to Shine, Achieve, Flourish – The SAF Way!
