Curriculum entitlement
The SEN code of practice (2015) states: All children and young people are entitled to an appropriate education, one that is appropriate to their needs, promotes high standards and the fulfilment of potential. This should enable them to:
• achieve their best
• become confident individuals living fulfilling lives, and
• make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education or training
At Sir Alexander Fleming, we strive to ensure all children have access to the full curriculum, adaptation and differentiation being a key tool to enable this. Ongoing assessment helps teachers identify possible areas of difficulty, and can address how these can be minimised, making adaptions to ensure the curriculum is accessible for all.
We provide for additional needs in a variety of ways, including:
- in class support for small groups
- small group or 1-1 withdrawal
- individual class support / individual withdrawal
- adaptation of resources
- specialised resources
- Nurture support
- SEMH support
Specialist support bases
At Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School, our internal specialist provisions, Lighthouse, Bloom and The Hive are an integral part of our school community. They are not separate from the school; they are part of the school.
Each provision is designed to meet the needs of pupils who require additional support to access learning, develop independence and thrive within a nurturing environment. While each base has a distinct focus, they share a common purpose: to remove barriers to learning, promote inclusion and help every child achieve their potential.
Our aim is never simply attendance within a specialist base. Instead, we work to ensure every pupil experiences:
- Belonging within our school community
- Meaningful participation in learning and school life
- Achievement at their individual level
- Growing independence and confidence
- Successful futures as lifelong learners
Through highly personalised support, strong relationships and a commitment to inclusion, Lighthouse, Bloom and The Hive help children shine, achieve and flourish, ensuring that every learner feels valued, supported and empowered to succeed.
Together, we create a school where every child belongs, participates, achieves and thrives.
Specific facilities and access
We endeavour to ensure all children have the opportunity to access all areas of school life, ensuring they are able to meet their full potential. Disabled facilities are available in all buildings. Where needed, advice will be sought from parents and outside agencies to ensure children’s needs are being fully met.
Adaptation, resources and specialist equipment may be employed to ensure children have access to the full curriculum. Learning needs are a major consideration in lesson planning, ensuring all needs are catered for.
All children are included in all areas of school life, where needed alternative ways of working will be employed to ensure all can participate.
