Rothesay Classic Birmingham Tennis Tournament Trip

We bought some tickets for the Rothesay Classic Birmingham Tennis Tournament, to take some of our Year 4/5 children to experience a large professional sporting event. Many of the world’s top players were in the draw, including Caroline Wozniaki and Heather Watson. The children were able to watch the matches on the 2,500 seater main stadium court, join in with some sporting activities and watch some of the players practise on the surrounding courts. We had many comments about how well the children were behaving and we hope they enjoyed their experience! They were even able to take away a ball that had been used on the courts by the players!

My Job as an Engineer Webinar

KS2 joined in with a live lesson on Wednesday this week, exploring what it was like to be an engineer. Exposing children to ambitious careers is crucial, and we hope all our children grow up to be ambitious and aspirational. Highlighting careers in STEM subjects is a focus for all schools and we hope our children learnt some of the highlights of being an engineer during the webinar

Google Drawing Creations!

Year 5 are loving their Computing unit on Vector Graphics this term. We have been using Google Drawings to create pictures using smaller shapes. We have used tools such as copy, paste, resize, fill, line weight, alignment and zoom to make them as good as they can be! Check some of them out below:

Year 5’s Arthog Experience

In April, some of our Year 5 children had the amazing opportunity to spend a week at Arthog in Wales. They stayed for 4 nights and experienced a wealth of activities, including: gorge walking, night line, canoeing, orienteering, hiking and many, many more!

The children were perfectly behaved over the week, and many of the instructors praised them for their manners and general attitude! We are very proud of them all and are sure they were filled with memories that would last a lifetime!

Lights…Camera…Action!

We are 3 weeks into our Lego League Club and have created part of our stage for our performances! We have had children finding the pieces, building, supporting and reporting and the children are doing really well together as a team!

Ironbridge Re-Imagined: Computing Project

Year 5 are taking part in a Adobe Express Creativity Project this term. We will be looking at content creation and using photo editing skills to ‘modernise’ a picture of Ironbridge. We had a workshop today to introduce us to the competition. We looked at importing media, cropping, resizing, removing a background, and adding new layers to a photo. We will continue to work on the project over the next few weeks with the hope of submitting some entries to the competition! Watch this space!

Lego League Begins!

We have 12 children from Year 4 and 5 who are taking part in the ‘First Lego League’ challenge this year. With support from two mentors and Mr Andrew, they will be creating a masterpiece over the next 11 weeks and then coding it to move however they want it to. They will be creating a poster and then presenting their creations at the Lego League Festival in July. They will be in teams of 6 and we can’t wait to see what they produce! In session 1, they met their team mates, discussed their hobbies and then created an area where a character could do some skateboarding! In just 15 minutes we were very impressed with what they came up with!

A Masterclass in Crumbles!

In Term 6, Year 5 will be using Crumbles in their Computing lessons, eventually leading towards building and coding a flood defence system to link with our Geography topic. Mr Gerrie, from Amazing ICT, got us ready by giving us an introduction to the kits. We learned how to use the crocodile clips to link the battery pack, Crumble and Sparkle, and then created a code to create a sequence of flashing lights. The children were brilliant and debugging their codes and showing resilience and we are excited to use the kits properly later in the year!

Sonnets in Year 5

Year 5 have been tackling Sonnets in their English lessons recently. We analysed a range of Shakespeare’s sonnets and found out about their syllable and stanza structure. We then explored the reasons we love our planet and then wrote a sonnet with all our ideas in! The children worked extremely hard and should be proud of their final outcome!
