ENRICHMENT

What a lovely afternoon the children have had enjoying their wide range of enrichment activities. The children have taken part in a wide range of activities, here are a few examples of the enriching experiences they’ve had today.

FUN AT THE HAZELS

Mrs Lane’s class had great fun testing out natural colours from mashed fruit and vegetables to dye wool as part of their current history topic (The Anglo-Saxons). They worked scientifically to make predictions and create experiments to test their theories. They can’t wait for their next visit to The Hazels.

FUN AT THE HAZELS – MONDAY 14TH OCTOBER

A beautiful, blustery morning up in the Hazels. The sun was bright, but there was a hint of autumnal chill. We all started with learning how to erect a ridgeline shelter. The children then worked in groups to tie the ridgeline, put a tarp over the line and secure it with prusik knots (a type of friction hitch), then peg out the corners to complete the shelter. Fantastic teamwork and lots of proud faces.
On the campfire, we got cracking with baked apples. After coring them, we stuffed them with a mixture of oats, brown sugar, raisins and butter. Once wrapped in foil, they were popped onto the fire to bake and go all squishy. Delicious!
The children had lots of opportunities to revisit some favourite autumnal activities. The rollercoasters were very popular and, using the new pieces of guttering added to the collection, created a huge run- it was spectacular!
We talked about mushroom safety, as one of the signs of autumn is seeing many more of them. Everyone was reminded not to touch or taste wild mushrooms or toadstools. We practiced this by admiring, but leaving them alone, some Brown Birch Boletes growing around the birch tree (these are very easily recognised, safe mushrooms but a good one for reinforcing our rules).
A great morning everyone, well done!

OUTDOOR LEARNING

What a fantastic morning to be outside with Mrs Lane’s lovely class. We started with a chat about the changing of the seasons and the arrival of autumn. It was fantastic to find a Pale Tussock Moth caterpillar crawling about, looking for a place to pupate (this means going into its chrysalis to metamorphosise over the winter ready to emerge in spring). We looked at the hairy little creature but didn’t touch as the hairs can cause skin irritation- but it was beautiful! Here’s a link to find out more about them:

Pale tussock

We got busy with exploring the Hazels and having a go at the brilliant activities on offer. We had autumnal art using found natural materials such as conkers, sweet chestnut and acorns.
The pallet dens and hammocks were a very popular choice, and it was great to see lots of turn taking and sharing as the children remembered our “Be Kind” rule.
Autumn rollercoasters were very popular as the children worked to create the best and fastest runs of pipes, tubes and guttering to send acorns and conkers whizzing down. Lots of great teamwork on display!
Some of the children came and helped create a “Stickman” from hazel wood. They practiced their skills using loppers, hand brace drills and saws to make a fantastic model. They then showed off super technique using peelers to whittle shorter sticks to create twig people.
Well done everyone and see you next time in the Hazels!

Year 5 – EXPLORE UNIVERSITY PROJECT

Today, we have been busy learning about university life. The “Explore University” project is organised by Keele University, Staffordshire University, University of Wolverhampton and Harper Adams University and aims to help primary school children understand more about university. The children were challenged to recreate many aspects of a university using lego. Year 5 showed great resilience, teamwork and imagination throughout the morning. Well done!
