Welcome to Year 6
Welcome to Year 6! We are delighted to welcome you to the final year of primary school. Year 6 is an exciting and rewarding year filled with opportunities to challenge ourselves, develop independence and prepare for the transition to secondary school. Throughout the year, we will explore inspiring books, tackle engaging topics across the curriculum and take on new responsibilities as role models for the younger children in our school. We encourage all pupils to work hard, be ambitious and make the most of every opportunity. We look forward to a fantastic year of learning, growth and memorable experiences together. 🌟📚✨

A message to parents
We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is key to every child’s success. Year 6 is an important year, and we greatly value your support in helping children develop confidence, resilience and positive learning habits. Through regular communication, home learning and encouragement, we can work together to ensure that every child reaches their full potential and enjoys a positive final year at primary school. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to sharing your child’s achievements and celebrating their successes throughout the year.
PE
Our PE days in Autumn 1 are every Thursday and Friday afternoon– please ensure children have kit for all weather eventualities! We will be completing football and hockey this term and will need kit that is suitable for the outdoors.
Your child will need to come into school in uniform, and they will change in school.
Children will need to tie their hair up and remove any stud earrings or provide plasters. Hoop earrings are prohibited. It is important that you send your child with the appropriate PE kit, each session. PE is a National Curriculum subject, and your child needs to be given the opportunity to work with the PE coaches.
Parent Reading
We invite you in to classes for our parent reader mornings. In Year 6, we offer a Tuesday morning 8:30-8:45.
Outdoor learning
In Year 6, we will be completing outdoor learning once each half term. We will notify parents a week before to ensure all children have the appropriate clothing and equipment.
Home learning
In Year 6, we believe that small, consistent steps make a big difference. Spelling tests and times table quizzes take place every Friday, helping children to build confidence and fluency in key skills. We encourage all children to read at home every day and to record their reading in their home reading record, on Reading Plus or on Seesaw.
At the beginning of the year, each child receives SATs revision guides for SPaG, Reading and Mathematics. These resources are designed to support learning throughout the year, allowing children to revisit key concepts and strengthen their understanding at a manageable pace. We also offer a range of clubs and additional support opportunities to help pupils achieve their full potential.
Spellings
Year 6 children are encouraged to practice their spellings weekly at home. They are shared weekly with interactive activities on Seesaw and can also be found here.

Times Tables
Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) is an excellent tool for practising multiplication fluency. By the end of Year 6, children should be able to quickly recall multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12, and regular use of TTRS can help them to develop this important skill. Times table quizzes take place every Friday.

Reading
Reading every day is one of the most important things a child can do to support their learning. Regular reading not only improves fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, but also helps children become more confident, independent learners across the entire curriculum. In Year 6, we strongly encourage all children to read at home for at least 20 minutes each day and to record this on Seesaw or in their reading record.
Whether reading independently, sharing a book with family members or exploring a favourite magazine or newspaper, daily reading helps children develop a lifelong love of books while preparing them for the demands of Year 6 and beyond. We celebrate and reward regular readers and greatly appreciate the support of parents and carers in making reading a positive part of each child’s daily routine.

Seesaw
Seesaw is our online learning platform and the main way we share information with families. We encourage parents and carers to sign up and regularly view their child’s learning journal, where you can celebrate achievements and gain a valuable insight into classroom life. Weekly reading and spelling activities are also shared through Seesaw, and children can earn rewards for completing home learning tasks and reading regularly.
Homework
Year 6 is an important year, and we often remind children that it is a marathon, not a sprint. Rather than setting large amounts of homework with strict deadlines, we encourage pupils to develop positive learning habits that they can maintain throughout the year.
Our expectations are simple:
- Read at home every day.
- Practise weekly spellings.
- Spend time using Times Table Rock Stars.
- Complete small sections of their English and Mathematics revision guides regularly.
We do not expect children to spend hours working after school. Instead, we encourage a healthy balance between learning, relaxation and time with family and friends. A little practice each day can have a significant impact over time, helping children feel confident, prepared and successful as they progress through Year 6 and towards their SATs.
Home Time
Your child will be released from their classroom fire door at 3:10pm promptly. Children will need to be collected by an adult who is registered on your key contacts list.
